THE EMMERDALE SET TOUR

A couple of weekends ago I headed up to Leeds to pay Emmerdale a visit for a set tour. (For those who read my blog from aboard, Emmerdale is a sitcom which is on TV a few times a week) On selected weekends from March to October, the set closes for filming and opens to the public for a guided tour which allows you to walk around the outside set and see the well known buildings which are iconic to Emmerdale village...

As this is a working film set, there is naturally security and you can’t just go swanning off on your own. You have to meet a location where a coach will pick you up and hour before your tour time. The pickup area is a hotel with a pub on site so you’re able to get some food and drink whilst you wait, if you have an Emmerdale booking you get 10% off which is great. However, we were quite disappointed with our experience here. For a Saturday they were very short staffed, it took us 20 minutes stood at the bar to order our food, the order was then wrong and pudding was a disaster... In the end we had to get a refund on pudding as it didn’t come in time! Not great when they know you’re on a tour. But anyway, if you go, keep that in mind.

The coach picked us up at 2 for a 3oclock set visit. It was up very winding roads and you did wonder if the coach would get up ok! But it was fine, and we hopped off the bus at about 2:45pm. Like I mentioned before this is a working film set so everything is how it would be for the cast, not at all glamorous... I’m talking port a loos! Up here was where the coaches stayed and there’s also a gift shop. Naturally, things are quite expensive. Mum couldn’t resist a £12 David’s Shop tote bag and I grabbed a pen for a couple of quid.

Out tour guide Mack was amazing; he was so informative and had a brilliant sense of humour. I don’t want to spoil it for those who do want to do the tour but you learn a lot about the secrets of filming, loads of facts are thrown about and you certainly say ‘well, I didn’t know that’ to yourself a lot. They film 8 weeks in advance, so some areas were off limits as they contained spoilers such as Home Farm, the landlord/lady names had been removed from The Wool Pack and a new grave stone had been put in the churchyard.

The tour lasts 90 minutes and its £30 per person. I think this is great value for money and worth every penny. I had such a great time walking around and you certainly don’t look at it the same way on TV! I highly recommend this tour for something a little bit different and any excuse to head back to Leeds is fine for me!

  1. I honestly thought it would be more than that for a tour, shame about the pub beforehand though! Maybe I'll look at getting this for my Mum's birthday/Christmas present as she LOVES Emmerdale and has to watch it everynight haha!
